What Is A Word Maze?
A word maze hides one word in a grid of letters, the same raw material as a word search — but instead of running in a straight line, the word winds: each letter sits next to the one before it, in any of the directions the puzzle allows, so the path can turn corners, double back toward where it started, and snake through most of the grid before it ends. Finding it means tracing a route rather than scanning rows and columns.
That single change moves where the difficulty lives. A word search is hard because there are many words to find among many decoys running in fixed directions. A word maze has only one word to find, and the difficulty is entirely in following its turns — which is why the harder settings here shrink the grid rather than lengthen the word: less room means more of the grid is on the path, so more of what you tap is a real step rather than a dead letter.
Only One Route Ever Spells It
The obvious way to build this puzzle is to draw a path and hope nothing else in the grid accidentally reads the same way. That is not what happens here. After the path is drawn and the rest of the grid is filled, every cell sharing the word's first letter is used to start an exhaustive search for any OTHER route — of any shape, from any direction the puzzle allows — that also spells the word letter by letter.
If a second route turns up, the grid is repaired, not redrawn from scratch. Whichever filler letter creates the accidental second reading is the only thing changed — the intended path is never touched — and the search runs again. That is the same discipline word search uses to guarantee every listed word appears exactly once, applied here to a path instead of a line.

Why The Filler Is Not Random Noise
Exactly like word search, the letters that are not part of the answer follow ordinary English letter frequency rather than a uniform random draw. A background of Qs, Xs and Zs would make the real path the only pronounceable stretch of the grid — the puzzle would solve itself by sound rather than by sight. Frequency-weighted filler gives the path somewhere to actually hide.
