What Is A Codeword Puzzle?

A codeword — also called a code breaker — is a crossword-shaped grid of interlocking words with one thing missing: clues. In their place, every cell carries a number, and the rule is absolute — the same number always stands for the same letter, everywhere it appears in the grid, and no letter shares a number with any other. A handful of numbers are handed to you free at the start. Everything else is worked out from crossings, letter frequency, and the shape of the words the numbers are building.

It runs in most UK newspaper puzzle pages alongside the crossword and the sudoku, under names including code breaker, codeword and code cracker. The appeal is the same reason a cryptogram appeals: there is no setter's cleverness to second-guess, only English itself, and the grid tells you exactly how much of it you have already worked out.

One Substitution, Laid Out As A Grid Instead Of A Phrase

This is the identical mechanic this site's cryptogram already uses — a single letter-for-letter substitution with nothing left in place — just arranged as an interlocking crossword rather than one line of text. Selecting a tile selects its number, not just that square, and typing a guess fills in every cell carrying that number across the entire grid in one move. A board that made you retype the same guess into every matching cell separately would be hiding the mechanic behind busywork.

A substitution cannot send two numbers to the same letter. If you have already decided that 7 means E, then 14 cannot also mean E — one of the two guesses is wrong. The board does not block this; it marks both in red instead, because seeing the clash is often exactly the piece of information that tells you which guess to take back.

Why This Page Needed No Clue-Writer At All

Ordinary and cryptic crossword are both outside what this site builds, because a person has to write a real clue for every answer, and that cannot be generated (see the site's standing rule on hand-authored content). A codeword needs none of that: the number IS the whole clue, so the only thing left to build is a real interlocking grid.

That is a construction problem, not an authorship one — measured before a single pattern on this page was written. Placing the longest word first and then repeatedly crossing an unplaced word onto an already-placed one at a shared letter reached an eight-word grid 100% of the time, and a twenty-word grid 100% of the time too, using roughly 22 of the 26 letters on average. There was never a clue-writing wall here — only a grid-growing one, and that one turned out to be cheap.

Show me the next move on the board plays exactly this sequence, in this order, and names which foothold it is using — because that is the order a solver who is any good actually works in. Nothing here is a guess dressed up as logic: every step names the completed word or the letter frequency that justifies it, the identical honesty cryptogram's own walkthrough uses.

236 Words, Unlimited Grids

Unlike this site's rebus and cryptogram pages, where the ANSWER is one specific bank entry, a codeword's answer is the whole assembled grid — so the word bank is an ingredient list, not an inventory count. 236 ordinary English words, three to nine letters, sit behind this page, chosen to cover as much of the alphabet as the words themselves allow, and every seed grows a fresh grid by crossing a different combination of them together. Say "236-word bank, unlimited grids" — the same shape futoshiki and calcudoku already use, not the finite-inventory shape rebus and cryptogram use.

Difficulty Is The Grid Size And The Givens

A bigger grid has more crossings for a stuck word to lean on, which genuinely helps; fewer given letters means fewer free footholds at the start. Both axes were measured rather than guessed at — an eight-word starter grid with four letters given builds instantly every time, and so does a fifteen-word expert grid with only one letter given, just with far more solving left to do once you are in it.
