Which Figure Does Not Belong

An odd one out puzzle shows a group of figures, all but one of which share some property — the same number of sides, the same shading, the same symmetry. Your job is to find the rule the group obeys, then name the figure that breaks it. The difficulty is rarely spotting a difference; it is deciding which difference the puzzle means.

Testing One Attribute Across All Five Figures

Almost everyone attacks these the wrong way round. They scan for the figure that looks different — but in a well-made question every figure looks different, because everything except the rule is varying on purpose.

  1. Look for what is the same, not what is different. This single change of direction is most of the skill.
  2. Take one feature at a time. Shape across all five. Then shading across all five. Then the dot count. Do not try to hold the whole figure in your head.
  3. Ask "do exactly four agree?" Not three, not all five — exactly four. That is the signature of the rule.
  4. If no single feature works, look for a relationship. The hardest rules here are not about one attribute at all: the dots match the sides, or the inner shape is shaded like the outline.
  5. Name the rule out loud before you answer. If you cannot say it in a sentence, you have not found it, and you are about to guess.

Why "look for the same" works. A figure that differs from the other four is only the answer if the four agree on something. So the useful search is over properties, not over figures — there are far fewer properties than there are ways for a figure to look odd, which is exactly why scanning for oddness feels endless.

Every Puzzle Here Has Exactly One Answer

The commonest flaw in odd-one-out questions is having two defensible answers: the intended figure breaks the intended rule, but by accident some other figure is the only hexagon, or the only one with an even dot count, and a solver who spots that is being marked wrong for reasoning correctly.

Every puzzle on this page is checked against a space of properties — nine attributes and nineteen derived relationships — before it is shown, and is only used if exactly one figure can be defended as the odd one. Where a draw comes out ambiguous, the accidental pattern is removed and the set is checked again.

Why Odd One Out Is The Trickiest Format To Build

Every other puzzle here has one rule and one answer. Odd one out has a rule, four figures that obey it, one that does not — and the constant risk that some other property accidentally singles out a different figure. A solver who spots that second split is reasoning perfectly and would be marked wrong. Every set here is therefore checked against nine attributes and nineteen derived relations, and any set with an accidental second answer is thrown away rather than shipped and hoped over.

Why can I not find the odd figure by looking for what stands out?

Because everything is designed to stand out. Only one feature is shared by four figures, and that is what identifies the answer. Search for the agreement, not the difference.

Can these puzzles have two right answers?

Not here. Each one is checked against nine attributes and nineteen relationships, and is only shown if exactly one figure is defensible as the odd one.

What if no single feature is shared?

Then look for a relationship between two features — the dot count matching the number of sides, or the inner shape shaded like the outline. Ten of the sixty rules are of this kind.

How do you find the odd one out in a set of figures?

Look for what four of them share, not for what one of them has. The odd figure is defined by breaking a rule the rest obey, so start by testing one attribute across the whole set — count the sides, then the dots, then the shading — and stop at the first attribute where exactly one figure disagrees. Picking the figure that simply looks unusual is the commonest way to get these wrong.
