What A Figure Looks Like In A Mirror
A mirror image puzzle asks what a figure, word or number looks like reflected left to right, as though a mirror stood beside it. Everything swaps sides and the order reverses — which is what separates it from a water image. Some characters survive a mirror unchanged, and knowing which ones is most of the skill.
Check Handedness Before Anything Else
Mirror image questions look trivial and are not. Almost every mark lost in this item type comes from doing half the reflection — and there are exactly two halves.
- Reverse the order. Whatever is on the left ends up on the right. For a group of letters or digits, read the original left to right and write it down backwards.
- Flip each part as well. This is the half people miss. A mirror does not leave the characters facing the way they started — every one of them turns round too.
- Check top and bottom did not move. If something has swapped vertically, you are looking at a water image, not a mirror image.
- Ask whether it could be a rotation. If the option could be reached by turning the original round without lifting it, it is not a reflection. This is the single most common wrong answer.
- Ignore anything symmetric. Shading, dot counts, and characters like A, H, O, X, 0, 1 and 8 come through a mirror unchanged. They can rule an option out but never confirm one.
The two-half rule. Reversing the order without flipping the glyphs, and flipping the glyphs without reversing the order, are both offered as options in almost every question here. If you can see which of the two you nearly picked, you have found your own weak half — and that is the whole value of practising this type.
Mirror Image, Water Image And Rotation
These three get confused constantly, and telling them apart is most of the skill:
- Mirror image — a vertical mirror standing beside the figure. Left and right swap; top and bottom do not.
- Water image — a horizontal mirror lying beneath the figure, as though it stood at the edge of a pond. Top and bottom swap; left and right do not.
- Rotation — the figure turned on the spot. Nothing is reflected at all.
The mathematical difference is handedness. A rotation can be reached by sliding and turning the original without ever lifting it off the page; a reflection can never be. That is why a figure turned 180° is such a convincing wrong answer — it has the right general look and the wrong handedness.
The Letters And Digits That Survive A Mirror
Some characters are symmetric about a vertical line, so a mirror changes only where they sit, not how they look. Knowing them on sight is worth several seconds a question:
- Capitals: A, H, I, M, O, T, U, V, W, X, Y
- Digits: 0, 1, 8
- The mirror twins: lower-case b and d are reflections of each other, and so are p and q. A mirror turns each into the other, which catches almost everybody the first time.

Reading A Clock Face In A Mirror
A clock in a mirror is the most counter-intuitive item in this whole type, and it has a clean rule: reflecting the face maps every position to twelve minus that position, so the time the mirrored clock appears to show is 11:60 minus the real time. Three o'clock reflects to nine o'clock; 4:20 reflects to 7:40. Both hands move together — checking only the hour hand is what makes people get these wrong.
